Manual transmissions in cars are simple as all flap, you can run essentially anything you like provided its not a high EP (normally GL-5) oil, most engine oil contains enough EP protection (meets GL-2/GL-3 at a guess). The oil light comes on when your engine suffers a drop in oil pressure. Without oil pressure, the engine can't lubricate itself, and the result is self-destruction, meaning you have to do some seriously expensive internal engine repairs.
